A young swan, aged nine months, has been successfully rescued after spending four days stranded on an icy pond in Edinburgh. The cygnet became trapped at Easter Craiglockhart Hill during a recent cold snap, causing distress to local residents. The Scottish SPCA initially observed the bird, attempting to provide food, but could not safely reach it due to the treacherous ice.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to assist, deploying 21 firefighters, two fire engines, and water rescue equipment. A firefighter experienced in handling swans was part of the team. They used an inflatable to safely reach the distressed bird, which was then handed over to the Scottish SPCA for transport to their rescue center.
Officials from both the fire service and the Scottish SPCA emphasized the dangers of attempting such rescues without proper training and equipment, urging the public to contact emergency services. The pond itself has a historical connection to recreational activities dating back to the 1870s.
