The Eden Project is marking its 25th anniversary, reflecting on a quarter-century of remarkable events since its March 2001 opening. Initially a clay pit for 160 years, the site near St Austell, Cornwall, has since attracted 25 million visitors.
Its history includes hosting major global events, such as the Live 8 concert in July 2005, aimed at raising awareness for AIDS and poverty in Africa. More recently, it served as the venue for an evening reception for G7 leaders, attended by the late Queen Elizabeth II in June 2021.
Co-founder Sir Tim Smit describes the Eden Project as a 'living theatre' that demonstrates action and inspires hope. He emphasizes its role as a 'people story,' acknowledging the immense support from various institutions, organizations, communities, and volunteers who helped realize this ambitious vision.
