A groundbreaking $7.8 million wastewater treatment plant has commenced operations in Dubbo, New South Wales, heralding a new era for water security. This advanced facility is designed to convert discarded sewage effluent into a valuable recycled water resource, capable of processing up to 700 megalitres per year.
The core of this innovation lies in a novel wastewater treatment technology developed by scientist Troy Warry. This system reportedly breaks down persistent pollutants, including pesticides and pharmaceutical residues, approximately 16 times more effectively than existing advanced oxidation methods. Its unique approach chemically decomposes contaminants rather than merely filtering them.
This initiative is a public-private partnership between Dubbo Regional Council and renewable energy company Squadron Energy, which contributed $3.6 million. The project not only supports Squadron Energy's regional development needs but also aims to provide long-term water security benefits for Dubbo, especially relevant for inland communities. Recycled water use is progressively being approved for applications like dust suppression and concrete batching.
