The Manx government has formally designated Douglas Head as a Conservation Area. This recognition highlights the headland's considerable historical, architectural, and cultural importance. While not entirely preventing development, the new status imposes restrictions on property owners within the boundary. Changes like window replacements or roof alterations now require planning permission. Applications are assessed based on whether they preserve or enhance the area's character, aligning with the Isle of Man's Area Plan which generally opposes new developments in such zones.
Douglas Head is already home to eight registered buildings, a density comparable to central Douglas. Notable structures include the Great Union Camera Obscura (1892), Douglas Lighthouse, and the historic Harbour Swing Bridge Tower with its original 1895 machinery.
