Dholera's Green Revolution: 3200 Trees Beat Salinity
5 Jun
Summary
- Over 3,200 trees planted in saline land now thrive.
- Drum plantation technique overcomes soil salinity and waterlogging.
- Project expands to plant 50,000 more saplings in Dholera.

In Dholera, Gujarat, a remarkable afforestation project has seen over 3,200 trees flourish in land previously deemed unsuitable due to high salinity and prolonged waterlogging. Launched in August 2025, the initiative employed a unique drum plantation technique, successfully overcoming significant environmental challenges.
Forest officials adapted the method by planting saplings in plastic drums filled with layers of soil and organic matter, elevated slightly and fitted with ventilation holes. This approach protected roots from the harsh saline soil and waterlogged conditions that typically hinder plant growth. The Dholera Special Investment Region Development Authority provided crucial support, including fresh water for irrigation via a newly installed drip system.
Remarkably, within a year, many saplings have reached heights of up to 12 feet, with some already bearing fruit. The improved soil conditions have also led to the return of pollinators and birds, and the natural growth of grass in areas where nothing could grow before. The plastic drums are slated for recycling, and the project's success has prompted plans for an additional 20 hectares of plantation.
Authorities are now preparing to plant approximately 50,000 more saplings using the proven drum plantation technique. This expansion aims to further increase the green cover within Dholera, a region currently undergoing significant industrial and infrastructure development, demonstrating a commitment to balancing growth with environmental restoration.
