A forgotten underground drainage system beneath the walking track of Baaro Sadhankeri Lake Park in Dharwad has been rediscovered, presenting a vital chance to revive the polluted lake. For years, Sadhankeri lake has received untreated sewage from nearby residential areas, degrading its ecosystem and creating foul odors. A drainage network built nearly two decades ago, intended to divert wastewater, had fallen into disuse and was forgotten.
Sustained efforts by local resident Venkatesh Telagar brought the issue to civic authorities' attention. During development works in 2007, a drainage line nearly 10 feet below the park's walking path was identified, but neglect led to its clogging. This allowed sewage to flow directly into the lake, rendering recent development and desilting works costing Rs 4.5 crore ineffective. Municipal assistant commissioner Arvind Jamkhandi confirmed the drainage line's location and plans to restore it, diverting sewage.
Residents are also advocating for a comprehensive revival of the park and lake, including restoring amenities like the musical fountain. Telagar emphasized the urgency of the situation to restore one of Dharwad's significant public spaces. The rediscovery and planned restoration of the drainage system mark a significant step toward healing the neglected lake and park.
