Derbyshire Wildlife Trust has successfully acquired 135 acres of moorland known as Middleton Moor, near Wirksworth. This landmark purchase was significantly supported by a Biffa Award grant of over £825,000 and £182,000 in public donations. The trust plans to implement a large-scale restoration project focused on rewilding the moorland.
The initiative aims to reconnect fragmented habitats and unlock the site's potential for nature's recovery. This will create a wildlife corridor, expanding an existing network to over 1,000 acres. The project is a testament to community support, with more than 2,300 individuals contributing to the appeal.
