Derbyshire Starts Food Waste Collection Monday
29 Mar
Summary
- New food waste collection service launches on Monday.
- Separating food waste prevents landfill and creates fertiliser.
- Collection will be weekly, separate from other waste.

A new food waste collection service is set to commence in parts of Derbyshire on Monday. Erewash Borough Council is rolling out this initiative, having already distributed kitchen bins, compostable liners, and lockable outdoor bins to numerous properties. The program encourages residents to separate food waste, thereby reducing the amount sent to landfill. This separated waste can be transformed into valuable fertiliser, benefiting agriculture.
Officials have emphasized the importance of following specific guidelines for what can be placed in the food waste bins. Residents must avoid including garden waste, plastics, packaging, or liquids. Food waste will be collected weekly, utilizing a separate vehicle to ensure efficient processing. This move aligns with broader efforts to manage waste more sustainably, as highlighted by the council's lead member for environment, Mark Alfrey.
