Delhi's government has unveiled a Rs 22,236 crore Green Budget for 2026-27, dedicating over 21% of the state budget to environmental goals. This initiative marks a significant shift, requiring 17 departments to meticulously track and report their expenditures against defined green objectives, enhancing accountability.
The largest financial allocation, amounting to Rs 6,485 crore, has been designated for the Delhi Jal Board. This funding is specifically earmarked for sewage treatment and the comprehensive clean-up of the Yamuna River, addressing the persistent issue of untreated waste discharge.
Further significant investments include Rs 4,758 crore to expand the electric bus fleet and improve public transport, and Rs 3,350 crore for dust control measures and green infrastructure development. These efforts focus on tackling pollution at its source through proactive strategies.
The plan disperses responsibility across government departments, including those handling planning, urban development, and power. Smaller, targeted funds are also allocated for water conservation, afforestation, cleaner industries, and environmental upgrades in schools and hospitals.
