Delhi's Dust Warriors: Nightly Battle Against Air Pollution
25 May
Summary
- Mechanical road sweepers combat Delhi's severe air pollution nightly.
- Workers face challenges during peak pollution and on difficult terrain.
- Old machinery and road conditions impact the effectiveness of sweeping.
Mechanical road sweepers are deployed nightly across Delhi's Central Zone to combat air pollution caused by road dust. This operation represents a significant effort by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to mitigate one of the city's primary environmental concerns.
The sweeping machines, operating at around 8 kmph, require a driver, a sanitation worker, and a supervisor. Workers manually clear obstacles and manually sweep dust when the machinery falters. Despite the advanced equipment, the effectiveness is hampered by poor road quality, uneven surfaces, and ongoing construction activities.
The machines collect approximately 1,200 kg of dust per round, which is then transported to landfills for leveling and processing. Some dust mixed with municipal waste undergoes bio-remediation to produce manure. However, the machinery, often eight years old, faces breakdowns, impacting the consistency of the cleanup efforts.
