Delhi's Winter War: Construction Ban, Fuel Curbs Loom
29 Sep
Summary
- Construction and demolition activities will be banned from December 10 to January 20.
- Vehicles not meeting BS-VI standards and registered outside Delhi face entry bans.
- Dust-generating activities and outdoor construction are prohibited from November 1 to January 31.
Delhi's government has introduced a comprehensive action plan to combat winter air pollution. Key measures include a complete ban on construction and demolition activities from December 10 to January 20. Additionally, dust-generating activities and outdoor construction will be prohibited from November 1 to January 31.
To tackle vehicular pollution, entry will be barred for vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not meet BS-VI emission standards, excluding CNG and EV vehicles, starting November 1. Parking charges will be doubled, with an exemption for electric vehicles.
The plan also involves staggered office timings and a 50% work-from-home mandate for government and private offices. Efforts are underway to improve traffic flow at hotspots and redevelop roads to mitigate dust.
Industrial pollution will be addressed with an AI-enabled Command and Control Centre and 334 enforcement teams targeting non-conforming industries. A 'zero burning' campaign aims to prevent waste fires. Recognizing that significant pollution originates from surrounding areas, coordinated action across the NCR is emphasized.
