Zoo Swap: Delhi Gets Tigers, Patna Gains White Tigress
24 Feb
Summary
- Delhi Zoo will receive a tiger and other animals from Patna Zoo.
- A white tigress will be sent from Delhi Zoo to Patna Zoo.
- The exchange aims to improve breeding programs and species diversity.

The National Zoological Park in New Delhi will receive a tiger and various other animal species from Patna Zoo next month. This exchange is designed to bolster breeding programs and introduce greater species diversity at the Delhi facility. In March, Delhi Zoo expects to welcome four gharials, four grey wolves, and two barn owls from Patna.
In exchange, Delhi Zoo will send a white tigress, along with Sangai deer, painted storks, white pelicans, and black bucks to Patna. This move is crucial as Delhi Zoo currently has limited options for wolf breeding due to having only one female. The initiative also seeks to prevent inbreeding, a risk in closed populations that can lead to genetic disorders and weaker offspring.
This animal exchange has been mutually agreed upon by both zoos and received approval from the Central Zoo Authority. Such programs are vital for maintaining genetic health and improving the well-being of animals in captivity. Similar exchanges have occurred previously, including acquisitions from Surat and Assam.
