Delhi Zoo Goes All Out for Animal Winter Comfort
19 Nov
Summary
- Animals receive blankets, paddy straw bedding, and wooden mats.
- Infant primates get blankets; reptiles have thermoregulation systems.
- Winter diet includes nuts, jaggery, sugarcane, and supplements.

As Delhi experiences its coldest temperatures this season, the city zoo has implemented a comprehensive winter care plan for its animal inhabitants. This initiative, which began on November 1, includes providing essential comforts like blankets for infant primates and paddy straw bedding for herbivores and birds. Carnivores and primates are also being kept warm with wooden planks and mats to insulate them from the chilly ground.
Specialized measures are in place for sensitive species, such as thermoregulation and humidity control systems for the reptile house. Bamboo jafri thatches have been installed in bird enclosures and other vulnerable areas to shield animals from cold drafts. The zoo director highlighted that the plan is species and age-specific, with adjustments made based on the intensity of the cold.
The winter diet has also been enhanced, now featuring nuts, jaggery, sugarcane, seasonal vegetables, and nutrient supplements to boost immunity. Dominant male animals in species like the Manipuri deer, which typically give birth in winter, are being segregated to reduce stress on mothers and newborns during this critical period.
