196 Delhi Water Bodies Dried Up Amid Encroachment
14 Jul
Summary
- Over 196 of Delhi's water bodies have dried up.
- At least 135 identified water bodies are under encroachment.
- Water quality is poor in 95 of 108 tested Delhi water bodies.

A recent report by the Wetland Authority of Delhi (WAD) to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) exposes the dire state of the city's water bodies. The assessment indicates that at least 196 out of 1,080 identified water bodies have dried up, with an additional 135 currently under encroachment. This situation underscores a significant environmental concern for Delhi.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) manages the largest number of water bodies, with 856 under its jurisdiction. Of these, 181 have dried up and 126 are encroached upon. Water quality assessments further revealed that 95 out of 108 tested sites have poor water quality, with only 11 showing good quality.
Other agencies also reported issues. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) noted that 22 of its water bodies receive untreated sewage, and four have dried up. Experts attribute the crisis to insufficient stormwater recharge and continued sewage inflow, exacerbated by persistent encroachments, calling for sustained administrative action to address these problems.
