Delhi Battles Severe Pollution with New Vehicle Restrictions

In response to persistently severe air pollution levels, Delhi has enacted strict vehicle movement regulations starting December 18. Only BS6-compliant vehicles will be permitted entry into the city, effectively banning BS3 and BS4 vehicles registered elsewhere. This measure is a critical step in the emergency response to control the worsening smog.
Further reinforcing pollution control, petrol pumps across Delhi are now mandated to deny fuel to any vehicle lacking a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. This rule aims to ensure all operational vehicles meet emission standards. Trucks carrying construction materials also face stringent penalties and potential seizure for non-compliance.
The entire Delhi-NCR region is under Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), implemented as air quality indices have crossed critical thresholds. This highest level of response restricts the movement of BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles, with exemptions only for essential services.
