Delhi Utility Tackles Sewage Pollution in Barapullah Drain
14 Oct
Summary
- Preparing action plan to prevent sewage from reaching Barapullah drain
- Seeking revenue records to identify and remove encroachments on drains
- Constituting task force to prevent sewage inflow into stormwater drains

As of October 15, 2025, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been taking proactive steps to address the issue of sewage pollution in the Barapullah drain and, ultimately, the Yamuna river. The utility has revealed that it has begun preparing a comprehensive action plan to tackle the problem in both sewered and unsewered areas within the Barapullah drain basin.
To aid in this effort, the DJB has approached district magistrates and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to obtain old revenue records. This will help the utility accurately identify the original width and length of the stormwater drains, enabling them to remove any encroachments that may have occurred over time. The DJB has also specifically requested the NGT to direct the DDA to provide these critical records for the demarcation of drain corridors and adjoining land boundaries.
Furthermore, the DJB has constituted a dedicated task force under the chief engineer (south) to ensure sustained vigilance and coordinated action. This task force is mandated to prevent the ingress of sewage into stormwater drains and identify all potential sources of wastewater or sewage inflows.
The utility has also stated that it will utilize its internal financial resources for minor works and sewer connectivity in already sewered areas. Additionally, the DJB has sought funding assistance from the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) for major infrastructure projects, including the construction of new decentralized sewage treatment plants (DSTPs) and associated sewer lines.
