Delhi's Garbage Game-Changer: No More Ground Contact!
7 Mar
Summary
- Modern transfer stations to be set up in all 12 Delhi zones.
- Construction and demolition waste management sites geo-mapped online.
- MCD planted 4.2 lakh plants to mitigate air pollution.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning a significant upgrade to its waste management system. Modern transfer stations are slated for establishment across all 12 zones, which will enable waste to be directly loaded onto trucks, bypassing ground contact.
This new system intends to reduce open dumping and enhance public hygiene by replacing older 'dhalaos' with closed, mechanized compacting facilities. This will prevent waste from spreading and ensure more efficient transport for processing.
In parallel, MCD is improving construction and demolition waste management by geo-mapping 111 primary collection sites online. Further, 48 new sites are identified for development as collection points.
The civic body also intensified road cleaning across its 6,130 km network, maintained by approximately 57,000 workers. Garbage collected is transported to three landfill sites.
MCD's commitment to environmental improvement includes extensive planting drives. Between April 2025 and January 2026, they planted 4.2 lakh plants, including trees, shrubs, and bamboo, to improve air quality and urban green cover.
