4 Oct
Summary
- Delhi govt. to survey entire 48-km Yamuna stretch.
- Surveys will map riverbed, identify blockages, and assess course changes.
- Findings will aid flood management and riverfront development plans.
The Delhi government has initiated extensive topographic and bathymetric surveys along the entire 48-km Yamuna river stretch flowing through the capital. From Palla to Jaitpur, these surveys aim to create a detailed map of the riverbed, identify any obstructions, and monitor alterations in the river's course.
These underwater mapping efforts will also document embankments, islands, encroachments, and ghats within 100 meters of the banks. The collected data is expected to significantly enhance flood management strategies.
Furthermore, the survey findings will be instrumental in planning proposed riverfront development projects and facilitating boat navigation. This initiative, costing approximately ₹80 lakh, is scheduled for completion within eight months.
Last year, the government had expressed intentions to undertake the river's first dredging, a measure aimed at restoring its natural flow and improving flood resilience.
