Delhi's Summer Water Plan: Supply Boost & Yamuna Cleanup
31 Mar
Summary
- Delhi targets 1,002 MGD supply, prepares major treatment plants for summer.
- Tube-well network to expand to 6,290 units; leak detection drives intensified.
- GPS tracking for 1,200 monthly tankers aims to increase supply transparency.

As Delhi anticipates another hot summer, the government has introduced its Summer Action Plan for 2026-27. This comprehensive strategy aims to secure water supply and enhance efforts to clean the Yamuna River.
The plan's core objective is to maintain a daily water supply of approximately 1,002 million gallons. All major water treatment plants are undergoing preparations, with careful monitoring of raw water quality, particularly ammonia levels that have previously disrupted services.
To increase water availability, Delhi plans to expand its tube-well network to 6,290 units. Simultaneously, intensified leak detection drives and maintenance of water infrastructure will help reduce distribution losses.
Ensuring equitable distribution, especially in areas reliant on tankers, is a priority. Approximately 1,200 tankers will be deployed monthly, equipped with GPS tracking and real-time monitoring for greater transparency and accountability.
Water quality surveillance will be enhanced, with daily testing to ensure compliance with standards. The plan also addresses sewer infrastructure, focusing on replacing old lines and preventing untreated sewage from entering the Yamuna River.
Technological solutions are being integrated for complaint redressal, including a CRM platform and mobile app, aiming for faster resolution of resident issues and improved accountability.
Discussions with Haryana for additional raw water are ongoing, complementing efforts to improve water storage within the city.
