Delhi Sewer Work Lags, Clean Water Promise Delayed
18 Mar
Summary
- Sewer line replacement in Janakpuri's A Block is 40% complete.
- Contaminated drinking water with coliform and E. coli confirmed.
- Work completion is now targeted for April 30, 2026.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that approximately 40% of the essential sewer line replacement in Janakpuri's A Block has been completed as of March 2026. The remaining work is anticipated to be finished by April 30, 2026. This crucial infrastructure upgrade aims to address persistent issues of contaminated drinking water plaguing residents of the A-1 Block.
Residents' welfare association complaints led to investigations, with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) sampling confirming the presence of coliform and E. coli in drinking water on multiple occasions between June and July of the previous year. DJB cited restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan's Stage III and IV, imposed from November 2025 to January 2026, as a reason for the project's slow progress.
To mitigate further delays and compensate for lost time, the DJB has increased manpower and machinery at the site. The NGT had previously expressed strong criticism towards the DJB for its failure to ensure the provision of clean drinking water to the affected residents. DJB is now making efforts to finalize the work by the April 30 deadline.
