Delhi Sewer Project Faces Major Delays: March 2027 Deadline
5 Aug
Summary
- Sewer network work delayed due to forest land, road permissions.
- Substantial portion of project now targeted for completion by March 2027.
- Public hindrance and local resistance stall work in two colonies.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that sewer network work in Sangam Vihar has been significantly delayed. Restrictions on construction within forest land and pending road-cutting permissions are cited as key reasons, pushing the targeted completion for a substantial portion of the project's second phase to March 2027.
DJB's status report outlines the progress of the sewerage expansion project, divided into two phases due to complex ground conditions. While sewer lines are complete in eight colonies unaffected by forest encroachments, work in 14 others, partially on forest land, has progressed only in permissible areas. This work is approximately 25% complete but slowed by statutory permission delays.
Further challenges include public hindrance and local resistance stalling work in two remaining Phase-II colonies in Durga Vihar and Deoli Extension. DJB has also completed peripheral sewer lines along major roads, intercepting domestic sewage before it reaches the Okhla sewage treatment plant. Phase I sewer lines have already been laid in several unauthorized colonies.
