Delhi's Ridge Gets New Water Bodies
27 Mar
Summary
- Eight new water bodies to be created in Delhi's Southern and Central Ridges.
- Plan aims to combat waterlogging by channeling monsoon rainwater.
- Project follows Union home ministry's suggestions on water management.

The Delhi forest and wildlife department is developing a plan to construct eight new water bodies across the Southern and Central Ridges. Four water bodies will be established in the Southern Ridge at Devli, Chhattarpur, Bhatti, and Ayanagar, while the Central Ridge will see four such additions, including sites near Vande Mataram Marg and Shankar Road. This project is designed to enhance the ecological balance of the areas and mitigate waterlogging issues that often occur during the monsoon.
Utilizing natural slopes and existing stormwater drains, the water bodies will be fed by rainwater channeled from higher points on the Ridge. This approach is intended to recharge the groundwater table over time and simultaneously alleviate flooding on nearby roads. Environmental experts have advised caution, emphasizing the need to prevent sewage contamination and avoid permanent structures that could harm the Ridge's ecosystem.
