Delhi Ridge Construction Sparks Environmental Outrage
1 Dec
Summary
- Building project planned on 5,353 sqm land within Delhi's Morphological Ridge.
- Environmentalists and residents protest privatization of vital green lungs.
- Legal disputes are underway in Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal.

Environmental activists and residents of Vasant Kunj, South Delhi, have voiced strong opposition to the construction of a large multi-storey building on a plot designated as part of the ecologically sensitive Ridge area. The land in question spans approximately 5,353 square meters, with a significant portion falling within Delhi's Morphological Ridge, an extension of the Aravalli ecosystem.
This development has ignited protests, with activists highlighting the crucial role of the Ridge as Delhi's "green lungs" and a vital natural defense against air pollution. The project, developed by RR Texknit, is planned to include 138 dwelling units across multiple floors, raising concerns about potential environmental damage and the loss of this critical green space.
The situation is currently entangled in legal disputes, with a contempt petition filed in the Supreme Court and an appeal lodged with the National Green Tribunal. Environmentalists emphasize that such ecologically significant areas, even if not officially designated as forest land, require Supreme Court clearance for any construction, underscoring the urgency of the ongoing fight.
