17 May
Summary
- 101 water bodies will be revived across Delhi.
- The initiative aims to improve water conservation.
- Restoration work is targeted for completion by August 2026.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has initiated the "Jal Sanchay Abhiyaan," a significant program designed to rejuvenate 101 water bodies throughout Delhi. This ambitious project aims to enhance water conservation efforts and promote ecological sustainability across the city. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu officially launched the initiative, emphasizing its role in Delhi's long-term water security.
The first phase of the "Jal Sanchay Abhiyaan" will focus on 101 water bodies, spanning approximately 155 hectares, with a completion deadline of August 30, 2026. This phase involves essential restoration tasks such as dredging, excavation, desilting, and clearing of natural catchment channels to optimize rainwater harvesting before the monsoon season.
In the subsequent phase, scheduled for completion by May 2027, the DDA plans to implement long-term sustainability measures. These will include fencing, embankment reinforcement, the installation of sewage treatment plants where appropriate, and extensive plantation drives around the revitalized water bodies. The initiative is a response to the historical degradation of Delhi's water bodies due to urbanization and waste dumping.
