Delhi's Monsoon Mission: Harvesting Rain for 73 Crore Liters
1 Jun
Summary
- New Delhi aims to harvest 733 million liters of water annually.
- 500 new structures and 1,000 existing systems will be revived.
- All upgrades must be completed by June 30, before the monsoon.

In response to recent water shortages, the Delhi government has initiated a significant pre-monsoon rainwater harvesting campaign. This effort targets the construction of 500 new rainwater harvesting structures and the restoration of 1,000 existing, non-operational systems across various government buildings. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is overseeing this crucial initiative, aiming to bolster groundwater recharge significantly before the monsoon season.
The project aims to capture and utilize an estimated 733 million liters of rainwater annually that would otherwise be lost to drains. This drive addresses Delhi's ongoing reliance on external water sources and the challenges posed by rising temperatures and increasing demand during summer months. Rainwater harvesting has been mandatory for larger plots since 2001, but many systems require maintenance.
Key government departments, including MCD and PWD, are involved in this widespread upgrade. The DJB has set a strict completion deadline of June 30 for the initial phase, ensuring that all newly built and revived systems are operational in time to collect monsoon rainfall. To ensure transparency and accountability, an online portal is being developed to track installations and compliance across the National Capital Territory.
Water Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized that water conservation is a continuous effort, not just a seasonal one. He highlighted the value of every drop of rain falling on Delhi and the collective responsibility to conserve it by returning it to the ground. The initiative underscores the government's commitment to long-term water security and resilience through effective water management and public participation.
