Delhi Launches Aggressive Dog Shelters Amid Stray Concerns

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has inaugurated a dedicated shelter at its Moti Bagh veterinary hospital, designed to accommodate up to 30 aggressive dogs. This facility is part of a broader strategy to manage the city's stray animal population, with plans for future expansion. NDMC has also established 100 feeding points across its administrative areas, finalized in collaboration with local communities and associations.
To streamline pet ownership, NDMC is developing an online portal for dog registration, including license fee payments. This portal will offer a database of registered breeds and their numbers, complementing the 722 pet dogs currently registered. Concurrently, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is also addressing stray dog issues, having recently relocated 25 dangerous strays from Najafgarh to a temporary facility managed by an NGO. MCD is planning a permanent shelter for 1,500 aggressive dogs in Dwarka.
As of January 9, 2026, NDMC has intensified Animal Birth Control (ABC) drives, sterilizing approximately 68,408 stray dogs between April and November 2025. The council also plans to expand kennel capacity at five ABC centers. Furthermore, two dedicated teams have been formed to handle complaints regarding cattle on major roads, ensuring a comprehensive approach to animal management within the city.
