Delhi-NCR Chokes Under Toxic Smog as Pollution Levels Soar

As of October 20th, 2025, Delhi-NCR's air quality has plummeted into the "very poor" category, raising serious health concerns for millions. In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), implementing stricter pollution control measures across the region.
The decision came after the GRAP Sub-Committee reviewed the rising pollution levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing 300. Authorities have been directed to intensify efforts to combat dust and emissions, including daily mechanical sweeping and water sprinkling on major roads. Construction and demolition sites will face enhanced inspections to ensure strict dust control.
To encourage the use of public transport, the authorities will augment CNG and electric bus services, increase metro frequency, and introduce differential fare rates for off-peak travel. Resident welfare associations have also been tasked with providing electric heaters to prevent biomass and solid waste burning.
According to doctors, breathing in the polluted air of Delhi is equivalent to the harmful effects of smoking approximately 10 cigarettes a day. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as cardiovascular diseases.
