Delhi Bans New Petrol/Diesel LGVs from 2027

Effective January 1, 2027, New Delhi will exclusively permit the registration of electric light goods vehicles (LGVs). By July 1, 2027, this mandate will extend to the high-vehicle-density districts of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonipat, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar. This phased approach by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) addresses the substantial contribution of vehicles to PM2.5 emissions.
Restrictions on diesel and petrol N1 LGVs will begin in other NCR districts from January 1, 2028, allowing only new electric and CNG registrations. Similarly, N2 LGVs will face phased electric-only registrations starting January 1, 2028, in Delhi and July 1, 2028, in key NCR districts, with broader implementation by January 1, 2029.
Beyond vehicle regulations, CAQM is implementing tighter norms for stone crusher units. These units must adhere to dust mitigation measures and will undergo technology-enabled continuous remote monitoring, including video surveillance and PM2.5/PM10 sensors, to ensure effective enforcement. While CNG reduces particulate emissions compared to diesel, its nitrogen oxide emissions necessitate a continued transition to cleaner technologies.
