Delhi-NCR Authorities Order Closure of Over 1,500 Polluting Industrial Units
18 Nov
Summary
- 1,515 polluting industries and construction sites shut down across Delhi-NCR
- Closures span 264 units in Delhi, 234 in Haryana, 637 in UP, and 121 in Rajasthan
- Study commissioned to re-examine emission standards for top polluting industrial sectors

As of November 18, 2025, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has directed the closure of 1,515 polluting industrial units and construction/demolition sites across the National Capital Region (NCR). This includes 264 units in Delhi, 234 in Haryana, 637 in Uttar Pradesh, and 121 in Rajasthan.
The CAQM's actions are part of a broader effort to tackle the region's severe air pollution crisis. Authorities have also commissioned the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to conduct a study through IIT Kanpur, re-examining particulate matter (PM) emission standards for the most polluting industrial sectors operating in Delhi-NCR.
These targeted closures focus on textile factories in Panipat and Sahibabad, food processing units and metal furnaces in Bawana and Bhiwadi—all major industrial hubs contributing to Delhi's deteriorating air quality. While the industrial sector's direct contribution to Delhi's PM2.5 levels appears modest, emissions transported from surrounding NCR districts can account for up to two-thirds of the capital's particulate pollution.
The CAQM's affidavit states that out of around 50,000 operational industries in Delhi-NCR, nearly 11,000 are classified as highly polluting. Authorities are now working to enforce stricter emission standards and fuel restrictions across the region in a bid to curb the ongoing air quality crisis.
