Delhi Landfills to Vanish by 2027!
24 Feb
Summary
- Bio-mining aims to clear Delhi's landfill sites by 2027.
- Existing agencies retained to meet challenging deadlines.
- New waste rules may impact future landfill remediation phases.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has committed to clearing its major landfill sites by July 2026 (Okhla), December 2026 (Bhalswa), and December 2027 (Ghazipur). To achieve these critical deadlines, the MCD will continue working with existing agencies for bio-mining operations.
Phase II bio-mining is currently underway, with targets to process millions of metric tonnes of legacy waste at each site. While Bhalswa shows rapid progress, Ghazipur has lagged behind schedule. The MCD decided to retain current concessionaires to prevent delays and complications with new contracts.
However, the upcoming Phase III faces potential delays due to new Solid Waste Management Rules 2026. These rules require environmentally sound management of landfills and may necessitate changes to existing contractual terms, especially concerning the definition and treatment of legacy waste versus fresh accumulation.
Beyond landfill remediation, the MCD's standing committee also approved a public-private partnership for park maintenance and a revenue-sharing agreement for advertisements at bus shelters. Initiatives like "One Road-One Day" sanitation are also being fast-tracked.
