The height of the legacy waste mountain at Delhi's Bhalswa landfill has been significantly reduced from 65 meters to about 30 meters, Mayor Pravesh Wahi announced after a review of biomining operations. The project aims for complete disposal of the remaining 2.75 million tonnes of garbage by the end of December 2026.
Biomining operations at the Bhalswa site commenced in 2019 following a National Green Tribunal order. Initially, the site contained approximately 8 million tonnes of legacy waste. Through ongoing efforts, over 4.5 million metric tonnes were disposed of in the first phase. The second phase, initiated in December 2024, has already processed an additional 4.34 million metric tonnes, accelerating the process.
