Delhi Jal Board Discovers Contamination Sources, Rushes to Resolve Janakpuri Water Crisis
27 Jul
Summary
- Delhi Jal Board found a dead water line connected to active distribution line in Janakpuri
- Cracked gate valve and underground pipe were identified as major contamination sources
- Residents have not availed of water tankers provided as an interim measure

Over the past few months, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has been working to address the issue of sewage contamination in the water supply of Janakpuri's A Block. In July 2025, the board informed the National Green Tribunal that it had discovered a dead water line connected to the active distribution line, which was a potential source of the contamination.
During inspections, DJB also identified two major issues contributing to the problem: a cracked gate valve near Gate No. 4 of A1 Block, which was temporarily repaired and then replaced, and a cracked underground water pipe near A1/36, which was replaced. The board collected 59 water samples from March to July 15, 2025, and found only three to be unsatisfactory, indicating that the remedial measures have been effective.
As an interim arrangement, DJB deployed water tankers in the affected area, but the residents have not availed of this service. As a long-term solution, the board has conceptualized the replacement of water and sewer lines older than 40 years in the area, and the tenders for this work have been floated.
The National Green Tribunal had earlier criticized DJB for failing to act on the Central Pollution Control Board's findings of sewage presence in the water supply. The tribunal had also ordered DJB to provide clean drinking water to the affected area through alternate sources until the problem was resolved.
