- Untreated sewage continues to pollute the Yamuna River.
The Delhi High Court has ordered the construction of separator walls and coverings for hazardous open drains following the recent death of a 15-year-old boy. The tragic incident occurred when the boy fell into an open drain in Jasola while chasing a kite. The court expressed "extreme concern" over the safety hazards posed by unprotected drains, especially along the Abul Fazal drain. It mandated the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to immediately place slabs covering drains in Okhla, Shaheen Bagh, and Abul Fazal Enclave.
Despite previous directives, the construction of a separator wall was delayed due to a pending NOC from Uttar Pradesh's irrigation department. The High Court, however, instructed MCD to proceed without further delay due to the immediate danger. The court also emphasized continuous desilting and cleaning of drains. Furthermore, the HC highlighted the ongoing issue of untreated sewage flowing into the Yamuna River, noting deficiencies in Delhi's sewage management system and directing authorities to improve sewage treatment and drainage infrastructure.
