No PUC, No Fuel: Delhi's Strict Emission Rule Starts
29 Sep
Summary
- Fuel stations in Delhi-NCR will deny fuel to vehicles without PUC certificates.
- Pollution control panel ordered a ban on fuel for non-compliant vehicles.
- Enforcement will utilize number-plate cameras for verification.
Effective from Thursday, fuel stations in Delhi-National Capital Region will cease selling fuel to vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. This directive comes from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which oversees pollution control efforts in the region. The CAQM ordered in May that "no fuel shall be dispensed" to such vehicles, with enforcement expected via number-plate cameras.
Previously, a similar rule was implemented in Delhi last December, resulting in over 3,700 vehicle fines on the first day. The PUC certificate verifies a test measuring specific gas emissions for petrol cars and exhaust smoke density for diesel cars. However, research indicates this idle test method may not accurately reflect real-world emissions and misses key pollutants like nitrogen oxides.
