Delhi Deploys High-Tech Mist Cannons to Combat Smog Crisis
10 Oct
Summary
- 166 streetlight poles equipped with 30 high-pressure nozzles
- Mist system covers 6.8km stretch, spraying RO-treated water
- Aims to reduce suspended particulate matter, dust, and pollutants

As of October 11, 2025, the Delhi Development Authority has implemented a new system to combat the city's persistent air pollution crisis. The system, which was recently inaugurated, involves equipping 166 streetlight poles with 30 high-pressure nozzles each along a 6.8km stretch.
The mist spraying system is designed to release RO-treated water at a discharge rate of 2.8 liters per hour, helping to settle the smog and reduce suspended particulate matter, dust, and fine pollutants such as black carbon. This, in turn, is expected to contribute to improved air quality in the targeted areas.
The areas covered by the system include the stretch from Chandanwari Apartments in Sector-10 to Omaxe Mall in Sector-19 on DDA road no. 224, and the stretch from Command Tank in Sector-20 to Sector-21 metro station on DDA road no. 210. The nozzles have been positioned at a height of 5 meters, which is higher than the 3-meter positioning used during the initial trial run, in order to enhance the efficiency of the mist settling.
The Delhi Lieutenant Governor, who inaugurated the system, has appealed to the public to take every possible step to curb air pollution, stressing the importance of behavioral measures in improving air quality. The DDA has also constructed three pump houses to provide the RO-purified water required for the system, and the waste water generated will be used for irrigation purposes.
