17 Jan
Summary
- New amphibious dredger and barges deployed at Najafgarh drain.
- Equipment targets silt, waste, and weeds impacting Yamuna River.
- Finnish-made dredger uses advanced technology for shallow water operations.

The Delhi government has commissioned an advanced amphibious dredger and supporting barges at the Najafgarh drain, a critical step in tackling the Yamuna River's pollution. This state-of-the-art machinery will focus on removing accumulated silt, floating waste, and invasive aquatic weeds from the drain, which accounts for a substantial portion of the pollution entering the Yamuna.
The "Watermaster" dredger, imported from Finland, is engineered for versatile operation in shallow and congested water bodies, capable of transitioning between land and water. It features a powerful excavator arm and a significant sludge pumping capacity, alongside GPS tracking for precise operations. This deployment signifies a commitment to employing cutting-edge technology for environmental remediation.
This initiative, involving an investment of approximately ₹8.04 crore for the dredger and ₹5.25 crore for the barges, is crucial for maintaining the Najafgarh drain's flow capacity and mitigating pollutant discharge, especially ahead of the monsoon season. Officials indicated that successful performance may lead to the deployment of similar advanced equipment at other sites along the Yamuna.
