Delhi's Dairy Waste Crisis: 90% Unauthorised Dairies!
26 Aug
Summary
- Nearly 90% of Delhi's dairy units are unauthorised.
- Unauthorised dairies house 22,540 cattle and generate 274 MT waste daily.
- New biogas plants will treat thousands of tonnes of dairy waste daily.
In Delhi, a substantial challenge to waste management arises from the prevalence of unauthorised dairy and gaushala units. A recent government report indicates that nearly 90% of the 557 assessed units operate without authorisation, collectively housing around 22,540 cattle.
These unregulated establishments generate approximately 274 metric tonnes of dairy waste daily. This untreated waste often finds its way into the city's drains and, subsequently, the Yamuna River, degrading water quality and straining sanitation infrastructure.
Overall, the 557 units studied house over 1.2 lakh cattle and produce about 1,500 MT of dairy waste daily. Only 11 dairies and a few gaushalas are authorised, highlighting the scale of the regulatory gap.
To address this environmental concern, Delhi is planning the establishment of several new biogas plants. These facilities, proposed at locations including Ghazipur Dairy, will have a total capacity to process thousands of tonnes of dairy waste daily, mitigating pollution and improving waste management.
