Delhi Crematoriums Get Pollution Scrubbers

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is initiating a significant environmental upgrade by installing emission control devices at city crematoriums. These facilities will be equipped with technologies like wet and dry scrubbers and activated carbon filtration systems to capture harmful particulate matter and toxic pollutants before they enter the atmosphere. This move addresses concerns about smoke emissions contributing to Delhi's air pollution.

The planned installations include advanced air cleaning systems featuring ducts, hoods, and suction mechanisms to channel smoke into treated chimneys. These systems are expected to achieve a 70-90% reduction in PM2.5 and PM10 levels, ensuring compliance with national pollution standards. The MCD is collaborating with IIT Kharagpur to design a technically feasible solution that captures smoke effectively while maintaining adequate ventilation for attendees.

This initiative is a critical component of Delhi's broader air pollution mitigation strategy. By upgrading cremation infrastructure with these emission capture mechanisms, the MCD aims to reduce localized pollution and enhance the overall ambient air quality in the city. Technical specifications and cost estimates are currently being finalized, with phased implementation planned.
