Delhi Dairy Plant Turns Cow Dung into Clean Energy
19 Oct
Summary
- A Rs 16-crore biogas plant is processing 200 metric tonnes of cow dung daily.
- The plant produces 5.6 tonnes of clean biogas and organic fertiliser.
- This initiative aims to reduce pollution entering the Yamuna River.
In a significant environmental initiative, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a Rs 16-crore biogas plant at Goyla Dairy in southwest Delhi on Monday. This facility is engineered to process 200 metric tonnes of cow dung daily, transforming it into clean fuel and organic fertiliser.
The plant is expected to generate around 14,000 cubic metres of raw biogas and approximately 5.6 tonnes of purified compressed biogas each day. The compressed biogas will be supplied to Indraprastha Gas Limited, while livestock owners will be compensated for the cow dung collected. The remaining slurry will be utilized as organic fertiliser to enhance soil fertility.
This project forms part of a broader government strategy to improve waste management in dairy colonies, prevent untreated dung from polluting drains and the Yamuna, and monetize waste. An additional Rs 50 crore has been allocated for drain construction and drainage system upgrades in Delhi's dairy colonies, underscoring the focus on sanitation and environmental protection.
