Delhi Drains: Sewage Tangle, Tender Efforts Begin
11 Mar
Summary
- Tender floated to measure sewage flow into Barapullah drain.
- Most sewage to Barapullah drain to stop before monsoon.
- DUSIB yet to provide action plan for JJ cluster sewage.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that a tender has been floated to measure sewage flow entering drains connected to the Barapullah drain. This study is intended to guide necessary intervention measures.
DJB's report indicates that large sewage volumes persist in supplementary drains from informal settlements. They are awaiting a solution plan from the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).
Authorities anticipate that most sewage flowing into the Barapullah drain will be halted before the impending monsoon season. As of March 11, 2026, 40 of 43 connected supplementary drains are expected to be linked to sewage treatment plants by June 30, 2026.
Two remaining drains are part of long-term projects scheduled for completion by 2028. Discussions are ongoing with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) concerning the third drain. DJB has repeatedly contacted DUSIB regarding the interception of sewage from 10 identified JJ clusters.
