Delhi Chokes: AQI Hits Severe Levels
28 Nov
Summary
- Delhi's AQI reached 384, categorizing it as 'very poor' air quality.
- Nineteen out of 39 monitoring stations in Delhi recorded AQI over 400.
- Vehicular emissions and industrial activity are the main contributors to pollution.
Delhi is grappling with deteriorating air quality, as the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to 384, placing it in the 'very poor' category. At 8:00 AM on Friday, 19 out of 39 monitoring stations reported AQI levels above 400, a significant marker for 'severe' air pollution. Specific areas like Mundka, Rohini, Anand Vihar, and Jahangirpuri experienced particularly high pollution levels, reflecting a widespread deterioration across the National Capital Region.
Neighboring cities such as Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad also recorded unhealthy AQI levels, indicating a regional air quality crisis. Data suggests vehicular emissions were the largest contributor to Delhi's pollution on Thursday, accounting for 19.5 percent, with contributions from nearby districts as well. Stubble burning, while a concern, accounted for a minimal 0.7 percent of the pollution on that day.
This sharp decline in air quality follows a period of thick smog. Despite the recent return to physical classes for schools after temporary restrictions were lifted due to a short-term improvement, the current pollution levels underscore the persistent environmental challenges faced by the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
