Delhi Air Quality Improves, Stage IV Restrictions Lifted
21 Jan
Summary
- Delhi's air quality improved from severe to very poor after three days.
- The Commission for Air Quality Management has revoked GRAP Stage-IV measures.
- Rain and thunderstorms are predicted for Friday, potentially further improving air quality.

Delhi's air quality has seen a notable improvement, dipping from the severe category to 'very poor' after three consecutive days of severe pollution. This change prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to revoke the GRAP Stage-IV emergency measures with immediate effect.
Among the lifted restrictions are the ban on entry for BS-IV trucks into Delhi and limitations on non-Delhi registered diesel-operated BS-IV and older heavy goods vehicles. Hybrid schooling for senior students has also been discontinued.
The average Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded was 378 on Tuesday, a decrease from 410 the previous day. The AQI is expected to remain in the very poor category until Friday.
Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Friday, predicting light to very light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40 kmph. These meteorological conditions are anticipated to bring further improvement, potentially shifting the AQI into the poor range.
Despite the revocation of Stage IV measures, the ban on BS III petrol and BS IV diesel light motor vehicles within the National Capital Region will persist. Additionally, measures under GRAP Stage III and lower will remain in effect.
