Delhi experienced a significant improvement in its air quality on Wednesday, moving from a 'severe' to a 'poor' AQI of 271 after nearly two weeks of hazardous smog. This positive shift was primarily driven by stronger winds blowing at speeds of 15-25 kmph, which helped disperse pollutants. Favorable weather conditions provided temporary relief, as the city had not recorded air quality in the 'poor' category since December 10.
Despite the current improvement, the Air Quality Early Warning System predicts a decline back into the 'very poor' zone within the next six days as wind speeds are expected to decrease. Vehicular emissions were identified as the largest contributor to Delhi's pollution load, accounting for 17.5% on Wednesday, followed by industrial activities and construction.
The weather on Wednesday saw a maximum temperature of 22.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 10.2 degrees Celsius. Looking ahead to Christmas Day, the forecast is for a minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 22 degrees Celsius, with clear skies after morning fog. Residents are advised to monitor AQI updates as conditions are anticipated to worsen.
