Delhi Chokes: First 'Very Poor' Air Quality Alert Issued
2 Nov
Summary
- Delhi recorded its first 'very poor' air quality of the season on Monday.
- Three monitoring stations in the city registered 'severe' pollution levels.
- AQI is expected to remain 'very poor' until November 5.
New Delhi is currently enveloped in smog, marking the season's first 'very poor' air quality day on Monday. The city's Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 324, the highest in nine months. Significantly, three air quality monitoring stations reported pollution levels in the 'severe' category at 4 pm, with Jahangirpuri recording the highest AQI at 436.
Of the 58 stations across Delhi, 37 indicated 'very poor' air quality, while 17 were in the 'poor' category. PM2.5 has been identified as the dominant pollutant, primarily stemming from vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and dust. The Delhi government's pollution control measures are now in their second day.
According to forecasts, Delhi's AQI is likely to persist in the 'very poor' category from November 3 to November 5. A marginal improvement to the 'poor' category is anticipated over the subsequent six days. Transport sector emissions contributed significantly to Monday's pollution, alongside industrial activities and residential sources within Delhi and surrounding NCR districts.
