Delhi Fights Smog: New App, Massive Funds

As Delhi's air quality continues to decline into the severe category, the city government announced a series of new initiatives on December 17, 2025. A substantial fund of ₹2,700 crore has been allocated to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi over the next ten years. This funding is designated for the procurement of mechanical road sweepers and litter pickers to improve street cleanliness.
To encourage public participation in mitigating the air pollution crisis, the Delhi government is developing a dedicated carpooling application. This app aims to reduce the number of private vehicles on the road. Furthermore, the existing Pollution Under Control (PUC) system for vehicles is set for an overhaul with the introduction of third-party monitoring.
In a novel approach to tackle smog, the government has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras. This collaboration focuses on identifying and developing smog-eating surfaces. Looking ahead, Delhi's Chief Minister is also scheduled to launch 100 electric buses on December 18, 2025, signaling a move towards cleaner public transportation.
