Delhi Battles Winter Smog: New Machines and Bans Planned
29 Sep
Summary
- 70 new mechanical sweepers to combat dust pollution in Delhi.
- A ban on uncovered construction material and wood for cremation proposed.
- MCD to deploy 1,000 sanitation workers per ward for cleanliness.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is implementing aggressive measures to combat the city's worsening air quality, particularly ahead of the winter months. This initiative includes the introduction of 70 new mechanical road-sweeping machines to mitigate dust pollution. These machines range in size to accommodate both narrow lanes and major roads.
Further proposals debated in the MCD House Committee include a potential four-month ban on uncovered construction material and a temporary ban on wood for cremations during peak winter. These measures aim to significantly reduce dust and other airborne pollutants contributing to Delhi's 'gas chamber' conditions.
The MCD also plans to deploy 1,000 sanitation workers per ward and specialized cleaning machines in market areas. Discussions also covered stricter penalties for open waste burning and the collection of outstanding NGT pollution fines, which could recover over Rs 100 crore. Concerns were also raised about the performance of private waste management contractors.
