Monsoon Blitz: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary on High Alert

Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary has implemented a robust Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to enhance conservation efforts during the monsoon months, from July to October. This strategic plan is designed to tackle challenges such as illegal entry, wildlife crime, and habitat disruption caused by flooding.

The sanctuary, a vital protected area in Odisha, is implementing intensified surveillance measures. This includes deploying 28 patrolling teams and mapping 129 foot-patrolling routes that span 941 km. The focus is on monitoring 62 vulnerable locations, including entry points and reservoir shorelines.

To bolster security, 71 eco-development committees have been integrated into the strategy. These committees will aid forest staff by reporting wildlife movements and sharing intelligence on illicit activities, ensuring prompt responses to alerts across the sanctuary.

Enhanced communication and response systems are in place, with three control rooms operating round the clock. A robust network of VHF stations and wireless handsets ensures seamless connectivity. Additionally, three boat patrolling teams and five motorboats are actively securing the Hirakud Reservoir boundary against smuggling and poaching.
