Deadly Dog Attacks on Swans Prompt Urgent Warnings for Pet Owners
26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Three swans killed, others injured by out-of-control dogs in London
- Swan Sanctuary urges owners to comply with laws protecting wildlife
- Swans described as "beautiful and intelligent creatures" facing many threats

As of September 26th, 2025, a bird sanctuary in London is sounding the alarm on a concerning trend of dog attacks on swans in the area. Over the past year, the Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton, Middlesex has reported three swans being killed and others sustaining serious injuries from dogs that were "clearly out of control."
The attacks have occurred at various ponds and waterways in London, including Wanstead, Epping Forest, and along the Thames in Wapping. Danni Rogers from the sanctuary has urged dog owners to comply with the law, which prohibits allowing dogs to chase or harm water birds. Despite this, many owners seem unaware of the legislation.
Rogers described one incident where a swan was rescued and brought to the sanctuary, but ultimately passed away two days later from the shock of the attack. He emphasized that swans are "very dangerous animals" that can pose a risk to dogs as well, potentially drowning them if they venture into deep water while chasing the birds.
The sanctuary is calling for greater public awareness to ensure dogs are kept under control near wildlife. Swans are described as "beautiful and intelligent creatures" that already face numerous threats, including predation, human interaction, and even poaching. The recent spate of dog attacks has only added to their struggles.
