Summary
- Cuddalore officials raise awareness about potential 2026 El Nino.

- Initiatives include tank desilting and flood prevention measures.

As potential El Nino conditions loom for 2026, the Cuddalore district administration has initiated an awareness campaign. This effort, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, aims to inform farmers about the climate phenomenon originating from Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature changes.
Officials are developing awareness videos to educate farmers on El Nino's impacts and necessary preparations. Concurrently, the district is bolstering its resilience through increased green cover, with plans to plant approximately one lakh saplings over two months. This initiative involves various government departments and aims to utilize barren lands and roadside areas.
Significant progress has been made in improving water infrastructure. Out of 107 identified minor irrigation tanks, 70% have been desilted and improved. Furthermore, the Water Resources Department is undertaking projects to combat seawater intrusion and implementing permanent flood prevention measures in low-lying areas affected by recent heavy floods.
