Cuba Powers Vital Centers With Chinese Solar Aid
9 May
Summary
- China donated 5,000 solar systems to Cuba for energy diversification.
- Systems will power vital centers and previously unserved homes.
- Off-grid solar ensures essential services operate during blackouts.

Cuba is implementing a program to install 5,000 donated photovoltaic systems, aiming to diversify its energy mix and ensure essential services amid an ongoing energy crisis. Elena Maidelín Ortiz Fernández, project head, stated that 2,671 systems are allocated for vital centers across all municipalities.
These vital centers include maternity homes, nursing homes, polyclinics, funeral homes, and communication facilities. The goal is to ensure these institutions can operate even during severe power outages, safeguarding activities like vaccinations and banking.
The remaining 2,329 systems will be installed in isolated homes, some of which have never had electricity. These off-grid systems enhance user autonomy, allowing more appliances to be connected for longer periods.
This initiative, along with other renewable energy projects like Canada-backed solar installations, enhances Cuba's energy resilience. These programs are crucial for maintaining community services during critical blackouts.
